A FoodCoop is a food cooperative. In other words, an association of people who self-organize and purchase organic products directly from regional producers. What is extremely important to us is the resulting environmental and resource protection, contact with producers and the knowledge that the food comes from ecologically sustainable and socially just origins. An appreciative attitude towards farm work and the food we enjoy is our central concern.
This means our food is selected according to the following criteria:
Seasonality and regionality
We source our food according to the season and ensure that the transport route is as short as possible in order to protect the environment. We do not have an upper kilometer limit for the term regionality. When purchasing products from a distance, we value environmentally friendly and creative procurement options.
ORGANIC
The products we choose must be produced and processed according to the basic principles of organic farming. The BIO-EU quality seal is a basic requirement. BIO-Austria or Demeter quality seals are even better. We make an exception for products from companies that are currently converting to organic operations and enjoy our trust.
When it comes to products of animal origin, a species-appropriate, animal-friendly and sustainable approach is particularly important to us. This includes treating the animals with respect and dignity. In addition to the applicable criteria for sustainable, organic animal husbandry, slaughtering on or, if possible, close to the farm is of great importance to us. Meat from animals that are not primarily raised for meat production is preferred.
Small before big
In order to promote a small-scale and sustainable cultivation and supply economy, smaller companies are preferred to larger ones.
Processed products
Products processed directly by producers are preferred as long as the traceability is transparent. This means, for example, a baker can be considered as a supplier if she uses raw materials that meet our criteria.
Packaging and waste
Packaging should be avoided as much as possible by using large containers. Of course, hygiene regulations must be taken into account and must of course be adhered to. Avoiding waste is also very important.
Fair & appreciative
What is particularly important to us is the appreciation for food and farm work. Another important aspect is to enable suppliers, their employees and consumers to receive fair prices.
In order to eliminate the anonymity between consumers and suppliers and to establish and promote a relationship between everyone involved, we organize, among other things, “dining trips” to all “our” businesses.
Joint actions
Activities such as joint cooking evenings help us to preserve food in a communal atmosphere, avoid waste and exchange experiences and knowledge. Workshops, courses, joint visits or holding information and networking events also promote our community and convey our values.
