Il rooibos, comunemente conosciuto come red bush o tè rosso africano è una pianta che cresce esclusivamente in Sud Africa. Dopo la fermentazione e l'essicazione al sole, le sue foglie assumono un caratteristico colore rosso, tratto distintivo anche dell'infuso che si ottiene. Ha un leggero gusto che ricorda la nocciola e la malva, con un sapore dolce ed è naturalmente privo di caffeina.

Nella storia il farro dicocco ha prevalso fino all’età del Bronzo in tutta la Mezzaluna Fertile. Da qui, tra 9500 e 7000 anni fa, si è espanso nel bacino del Mediterraneo, dove è rimasto il frumento più diffuso sino alla comparsa dei frumenti duri.
È nella seconda metà del XX secolo, con la modernizzazione dell’agricoltura, che il farro va via via scomparendo dalle rotazioni agricole, per essere relegato in piccolissime aree marginali, alle quali si adatta soprattutto grazie alla rusticità, alle modeste esigenze di fertilità dei terreni, alla resistenza al freddo.
